My last interaction with people from a laptop repair shop in London was particularly stimulating. During the meeting, the British PC repairs people told me a lot many things. They shared many laptops repairing and maintenance secrets with me. Some of which I discussed in a previous article.
As the title suggested, the article dealt with laptop screens that bother quite many people, but a faulty laptop screen does not bother as many people as does the freezing of laptops. So for this article, the natural choice was to share the tips about laptop freezing.
Why laptop freeze?
The fan speed and overheating
Every time you take your laptop out of its shell, you expose it to dust, dirt, humidity, and several other things that clog the inbuilt cooling fan of your laptop, which thwart the fan's rotation. This results in overheating, which causes sudden and unexpected freezing of your laptop.
The clogged cooling fan is the most common reason behind freezing in both laptops and desktops. The freezing issue gets resolved once the fan is cleaned. Cleaning a fan is not very difficult on a desktop, but it is an altogether different story for a laptop, for it is not easy to wide-open the laptop, unlike a desktop CPU.
It would help if you tried blowing in the fan vent from one side for the obstruction to come out. You can also use a small dryer to do the trick. But in no condition, I would recommend you open the skull of your laptop if you are not an expert in doing that. Take your laptop-to-laptop repair service centres if blowing does not solve the problem.
Insufficient RAM
RAM stands for Random Access Memory, which plays a pivotal role in the proper functioning of your laptop. Laptops that have less RAM freeze often, particularly when one or more of the following situations occurs:
· Too many programs are running simultaneously.
· Too many services are running in the background.
· Too many startup items.
· You are running programs that were launched months after you purchased your system.
· Two or more heavy (memory hogging) applications are running simultaneously.
· Each of the above-described situations can freeze your laptop to death. After which, only restart would make any difference. Upgrading your RAM is an obvious and permanent solution to this problem, but the solution is not always immediate.
Just imagine you are in the middle of something, and your laptop freezes. Will you rush to a computer repair services shop, or will you try to temporarily fix it so that you can finish your work?
As an immediate solution, you should, therefore, click the start menu and then press Run. Now type msconfig in it and press enter. Go to the Services tab and stop the unwanted services from running in the background. Now go to the Startup tab and uncheck unnecessary items from starting up with the windows and running in the background. You can also stop unwanted services by typing services.msc in the Run window.
To keep your computer working without freezing, you should avoid using software launched months after you bought your laptop. It may require a more advanced system than was available at the time of your purchase.
